Reflections

I learned a great deal about new literacies this semester as it relates to both teaching and learning. I learned that there is such much available to us as teachers in terms of new literacies, via gaming sites, blogs, presentation tools/apps and virtual classrooms. We only need to familiarize ourselves with them and teach using them as alternatives was of conducting research, working as a group, using new tools of technology to compile the data and then present it.  These new literacies can benefit ELA in a new capacity. I have also learned from fellow students as everyone had something different to bring to our discussions via blackboard or blogs. This coupled with my in class experience has allowed me to see the bigger picture and enabled me to make the connection between coursework and meeting students needs in the classroom.  I wish everyone lots of luck in their future endeavors and Happy Holidays to you ALL!

GLOGSTER - Week 12

GLOGSTER is a relatively new site used for interactive learning in an effort to create posters, on a virtual customizable canvas. You can view, respond and share work done by other students worldwide.  It is a very cool concept and address students learning needs at every level with use of audio, video and text format, making it extremely user friendly this allows for educational affordances for all students.  Even ELL student may create using this site in a way that lends more creativity with research capabilities like Wikipedia. I like the flexibility of the site which lends its users to be as creative as possible in a limitless way. It does seem to be a bit pricey especially for students in the upper grades/ This is most certainly a big con when considering the use of this site for lessons and projects.

The Impact of Using Blogs on College Students’ Reading Comprehension and Learning Motivation

This week's reading entitled " The Impact of Using Blogs on College Students’Reading Comprehension and Learning Motivation" was written by HUI-YIN HSU AND SHIANGKWEI WANG. This article highlighted with factual data and research why new literacies must be brought into the classroom in an effort to reach students who live in a technology rich and digitally saturated world, even more so than adults do.  The study looked at reading scores from years past and highlighted significant drops in reading comprehension now in the 21st century. The article mentioned that young adults spend more time reading screens than books. They find that books are not as engaging for them and as a result they do less traditional reading and this shift is impacting not just reading abilities but writing as well.  Also students are often "distracted" when sitting with their nightly homework, there are other things happening in the background like video games, telev...
