Simulation Gaming Article

1. What gaming elements provide users the learning content and how? Looking at gaming literacy from the perspective of game playing, is equivalent to reading according to the article, and game designing would be equivalent to writing or creating. Students are using these new literacies to encode and decode information and meaning through non-printed text, such as animation, music, games and videos. The younger generation today are not simply playing games but learning and fine tuning a brand new skill set that will be quite valuable to them in later years, living in the 21st century.   Taking the game CANDY CRUSH as an example.  TEXT - Found throughout  games, giving instructions, hints, warnings. Students must be able to read these text in order to be successful in completing games. In Candy Crush, you will not see much text throughout the game. The instructions are at the start of the game and that is it. VISUAL-GRAPHIC ELEMENTS: Severs as more clues throughout...

New Literacies Definition and Framework

Which ideas from the video reflect what the ELA teachers you interviewed are currently doing to integrate technology with their literacy instruction? The teacher I interviewed does integrate technology each day with lessons on the smart board. At certain points in her lesson, students maybe asked to go up to the smart board to answer a question or participate in something that is interactive but this does not include every child, as she will select a few children each day.  How can you help change their instructional practices to include the use of technology and the Internet in their literacy and content-area curriculum? I would suggest to this teacher to have students use their ipads during the lesson, so that they may answer and solve the problems on their own at their seats, utilizing the avail technology .  What professional development and/or resources will they need in order to make these changes?I believe staff development would improve this problem  ...

New Literacies and 21st Century Technologies

This article discussed ITCs in the classroom and it's importance to students now and for their future.  Literacy educators now have a responsibility to teach this to their students and to arm themselves w with professional development to improve upon their technology skills. In some parts of the world students are well equipped with these tools of technology, the author referred to these types of school as the haves whereas the haves-not are behind and will continue to be behind. What could this mean for the future of these children, who will certainly be at a disadvantage in years to come and in the work force. The responsibilities lay with teachers, parents, teacher educators, school administrators, policymakers and even researchers. I think the biggest impact and benefit can only come from teacher education programs, if they are mandatory. If teachers are exposed to ITCs in their training it will not be such a foreign concept to them and thereby the students will reap the be...

Literacy Instruction with Digital and Media Technologies

This was a phenomenal article! Ever teacher, principal, administrative leader should read this article. The article discussed so many way that technology can be incorprated into the classroom. The article highlighted a teacher by the name of Todd Wright in Nevada who is doing such amazing things with technology and it encompasses about 80% of the school day. Students entering the classroom each day with chrome books will start their day with a virtual check in! They log in to see what is on their agenda for the morning, typically they will receive emails from the teacher that way, view their morning assignments and work independently on whatever task they were assigned. As the morning progressed they might work in groups or in pair-shares, researching a particular topic.  They take a break from the screens when they are meeting with the teacher individually or during leveled- reading. What I found most interesting about the article was the many ways or reasons why we are NOT us...

Assignement 2 - Understanding ELA Instruction

Under the Reading Standard, Students will need to read closely, siting complex text, pointing out evidence within text and making logical inferences based on the reading in the text. Under the Writing Standard, Students will need to write arguments, write informative texts, draw evidence from literacy and assess the credibility of the source based on what was in the reading. Under the standard for speaking and listening, students will need to gain a full range of conversation and collaboration, speak clearly and persuasively and adapt speech to a variety of contexts. Students will also gain knowledge and understanding of the give and take in a discussion or argument. Under Language students will need to have full conventions of Standard English, knowledge of language and full acquisition of language and use. All of theses standards go hand in hand and are designed to overlap each other.

Assignment 2 - Common Core Standards

The video this week discussed the huge disparity found from state to state as it relates to to the standards in education. It is interesting to know that a child in one state who is barely reaching the benchmarks in ela or literacy could potentially move to another state and fall in the top percentage for these same subjects or grade level. The goal is to have these standards be uniform. The standards address college and career readiness with four areas of concentration: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening and Language. These standards aim to improve the overall student in real world application, college and beyond by aiding communication and collaborating experiences inside the classroom from Kindergarten through grade 12.I like the way these standard are laid out very clearly and I agree that these skills are very necessary in college readiness and for applications in real world situations. I agree with what was said in the video, that when our students find themselves in the ...

Teacher Interview

School PS 193 Teacher: L. Uhl Q: How do you integrate technology in your teaching to facilitate young learners' language and literacy development?  A: I try to integrate technology in my classroom with use of ipads for research, google classroom so that students access their assignments and the smartboard on a daily basis.
